MEN’S HEALTH MONTH: 7 WAYS TO STAY PHYSICALLY ACTIVE

Every June, we celebrate Men’s Health Month. It is a time to raise awareness about the health issues that affect men; and to encourage early detection, healthy habits, and active lifestyles. One of the most powerful (and often underestimated) ways to support your physical and mental well-being? Staying active. And it’s simple to do.

Between long work hours, family commitments, and everyday stress, it’s easy to let fitness slide. But even a little movement each day can make a big difference in preventing chronic disease, boosting energy, and improving mental health.

7 simple, realistic ways to stay active and take control of your health

  1. Start With Just 20 Minutes a Day: You don’t need to train like an athlete to see results. Just 20–30 minutes of moderate exercise—like brisk walking, cycling, or bodyweight exercises—can improve heart health, metabolism, and mood. The key is consistency, not intensity. Try this: Set a timer and go for a walk after lunch or dinner every day this week.
  2. Turn Everyday Tasks Into Movement: Exercise doesn’t always mean the gym. Activities like mowing the lawn, cleaning the garage, or playing tag with your kids all count. Look for movement opportunities in your daily routine. Try this: Park farther away, take the stairs, or do pushups during TV commercials.
  3. Build Muscle With Bodyweight Workouts: Resistance training is critical for maintaining strength, preventing injury, and boosting testosterone levels. You don’t need a gym—bodyweight exercises like squats, push-ups, lunges, and planks can be done anywhere. Try this: Create a 15-minute circuit of 3–4 bodyweight moves and do it three times per week.
  4. Find an Activity You Enjoy: Hate running? Don’t run. The best workout is the one you’ll actually stick with. Whether it’s basketball, hiking, swimming, or boxing, choose something that feels fun—not forced. Try this: Explore a new sport or sign up for a local recreational league with a friend.
  5. Set Goals You Can Track: Whether it’s steps per day, pounds lifted, or minutes exercised, tracking your progress gives you motivation and accountability. Try this: Use a fitness app or smartwatch to track steps, workouts, and progress toward weekly goals.
  6. Make Movement Social: Working out with a buddy or joining a group class can make exercise more enjoyable and keep you committed. Plus, the camaraderie and accountability can give you that extra push. Try this: Invite a coworker to a lunch walk or join a weekend pick-up game.
  7. Stretch and Recover: Don’t ignore flexibility and recovery. As we age, mobility becomes more important. Regular stretching and rest days help prevent injuries and keep you feeling good. Try this: Add 5–10 minutes of stretching or foam rolling at the end of each workout.

Staying active doesn’t require perfection—just a plan and a little intention. This Men’s Health Month, challenge yourself to move more, sit less, and build habits that will serve your body and mind long-term.

Start small. Stay consistent. And remember: your health is your responsibility — but you’re not alone in it.
