Two street signs with fitness and health.

THE IMPORTANT CONNECTION BETWEEN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND MENTAL HEALTH

Most people are aware that exercise, or any type of physical activity no matter the duration, is beneficial to their physical health – heart, muscles, and potentially one’s waistline. What is often undervalued is the importance of exercise to one’s brain health. Physical activity is beneficial for a variety of neurologic and psychiatric reasons. That can include reduced risk of dementia, reduced feelings of anxiety and depression (in individuals with and without clinical diagnoses), improved cognitive function, and improved sleep.

A recent national poll from the American Psychiatric Association found that a strong majority of adults (83%) who participate in sports report it benefits their mental health. Nearly half (49%) say it helps a “great deal”. Men are more likely than women (55% to 40%) to say sports benefits their mental health a great deal.

And this goes for anyone of any physical ability level.

Having good mental health positively affects our lives and enables us to meet life’s responsibilities and find happiness and meaning. Poor mental health can have negative impacts on our physical health, how we feel about ourselves, and how we interact with the world and those around us.
